Chemotrophy-based phosphatic microstromatolites from the Mississippian at Drewer, Rhenish Massif, Germany

چکیده

Abstract The Drewer quarry located in the Rhenish Massif is a well-studied outcrop that comprises Upper Devonian (Famennian) to Lower Carboniferous (Viséan) strata. Within deposits two black shale intervals have been described are linked global oceanic anoxic events, Hangenberg Event and Alum Shale Event. shales associated with Middle Tournaisian contain abundant phosphatic concretions, which were investigated using thin section petrography, powder X-ray diffraction, Fourier-transform infrared spectrometry scanning electron microscopy. concretions formed during several growth phases under at least episodically sulphidic conditions within sediment served as substrate for subsurface microbial mats microstromatolites. microstromatolites occur either partially branched columns of up 600 µm length attached or smaller, bulbous aggregates surrounding concretions. Element mapping identified presence pyrite other metal sulphides carbon oxygen stable isotopic composition phosphate-associated carbonate suggests mat-forming microorganisms probably anaerobic, chemotrophic communities dwelling environment Such interpretation agrees deeper-water depositional setting Black its high content organic matter, suggesting potent agents phosphogenesis general, formation stromatolites particular.

Geochemistry of the Mississippian Delle Phosphatic Event, Eastern Great Basin, U.s.a

The Middle Mississippian Delle phosphatic event marks a significant change in depositional conditions in the Devonian–Mississippian Antler foreland basin of North America. Stratigraphic and petrographic studies show that deposition of Delle-event rocks ended a long period of open-marine carbonate sedimentation when facies shifted to phosphorites, cherts, fine-grained siliciclastics, and lime mu...

Structure of oceanic core complexes: Constraints from seafloor gravity measurements made at the Atlantis Massif

[1] Using the DSV Alvin, the relative seafloor gravimeter ROVDOG was deployed at 18 sites on the Atlantis Massif (located at the ridge-transform intersection of the MidAtlantic Ridge and the Atlantis Transform Fault near 30 N, 42 W). These data along with previously collected shipboard gravity and bathymetry provide constraints on the density structure of this oceanic core complex. A series of ...

MISSISSIPPIAN CHIEFDOMS: How Complex?

■ Abstract During the Mississippian period (A.D. 1000–1500) the southeastern United States witnessed a broadscale fluorescence of polities characterized by impressive earthwork construction, rich mortuary offerings, and intensified agriculture. Research on the nature of complexity in these so-called chiefdoms has been an enduring issue in North American archaeology, even as this research has un...

Early Carboniferous (Mississippian) miospore assemblage from Persian Gulf, Southwest Iran

A Mississippian miospore assemblage has been recorded from well A in the Persian Gulf in Iranian offshore, for the first time. Fifteen species of spores have been recognized in the Early Carboniferous assemblage of this well which the most important of them are: Spelaeotriletes arenaceus, Aratrisporites saharaensis, Spelaeotriletes balteatus, Spelaeotriletes triangulus and Radiizonates arcuatus...
